現代社会は、その歴史の中で積み重ねられた概念や基準で構築され、人はその仕組みの中で生きている。しかしその仕組みは、同時に人の精神的な領域にも無数の基準を定着させ、社会に存在する様々な物事の両極の間に存在する本来は流動的であるべき領域を無数の境界線で拘束し、その多様性を阻害している。
田中直樹は、そのような社会の仕組みの中で生きながらも、人の精神は流動的であるべきとの考えから、自己の行為を、人の固定観念や既成概念にズレを生じさせ、精神を流動的に再構築するための試みと位置付け、基準や仕組みの中に置かれた人の意識に作用する多様性空間の可視化を、表現の軸に制作を続けている。
その手法として、田中は自身の作品に異なった複数の意味を混在させることで、作品と対峙した鑑賞者の解釈を曖昧にしている。例えば、田中の作品はドットパターンのように同じものを連続して配列した集合体で表現されるが、作品を構成する最小単位は、ドット（点）から日常誰もが認知できる物に置き換えられる。完成した作品は、作品を構成する物固有の意味と、集合体としての意味、異なった複数の意味を持つ事になる。
今回の個展では、ジグソウパズルのピースを使用した平面作品が展示されるが、ジグソウパズルピースもまた一連の作品に最小単位として使用される要素の一つであり、個々では立体のパズルピースを平面状に連鎖する手法はこれまでの表現手法を踏襲している。
また、『染』と言うタイトルは、「染める」.「染まる」などの物理的現象のほかに、人の意識や感情の変化、社会で起こりうる様々な物事の移り変わり、動いている状態を表していて、作品には崩壊や再生、感染、浄化と言った異なった時間軸が存在する。今回展示される作品は事象の結果を切り取ったものではなく、変化の途中を表わしていて、先の変化の方向を限定していない。その変化の先は、作品と対峙した鑑賞者の精神へと繋がり、それぞれの結末へと向かうことになる。


Modern society is built on concepts and standards, which is accumulated throughout history, and people live within this society. At the same time, however, this system also establishes countless of standards in human mental, constraining the supposedly fluid realm between the poles of the various things that exist in society with countless boundaries and inhibiting its diversity.
Naoki Tanaka believes that the human spirits should be fluid while living within this social structure, and he positions his own acts as an attempt to create a gap in people’s stereotypes, and preconceived notions and to reconstruct the spirit fluidly, visualizing the diversity space that acts on people’s consciousness placed within the standards and structures. He continuously creates works based on this axis of expression.
As a method, he mixes multiple different meanings into his works, which makes the interpretation of the viewer ambiguous. For example, his works are expressed as a collection of identical objects arranged in a series, like a dot pattern. But the smallest unit that constitutes the work is replaced from a dot to an object that everyone can recognize in everyday life. The completed work has multiple meanings, one specific to the objects that make up the work, and another as an aggregate.
In this exhibition, jigsaw puzzle pieces will be used to create two-dimensional works, but the jigsaw puzzle pieces are also one of the elements used as the smallest unit in a series of works, and the method of individually chaining three-dimensional puzzle pieces into a two-dimensional form follows his previous method of expression.
The title “Dye” means the physical phenomena of “dye” and “be dyed” as well as to the physical phenomena of “dye” and “be dyed”. In addition to physical phenomena such as “dye” and “be dyed,” the title also refers to changes in people’s consciousness and emotions, as well as to the transitions of various things that can occur in society and the state of movement, and the works have different time axes, such as collapse, rebirth, infection, and purification. The works in this exhibition do not cut out the results of events, rather represent the process of change, and do not limit the direction of change ahead. The destination of the change is connected to the spirit of the viewer, and will lead to each conclusion.
