大谷尚哉は写実的絵画技法を用いて具象表現を行う作家です。
絵画技法は表現に必要なツールと考え、様々な視点から平面の作品を制作します。静物や風景、抽象的に見えるものまで、モチーフを統一することなく作品ごとに違った手段で作品化していきます。また、大谷が制作する上で必ずモチーフを観察して制作をするというルールを設け、写真等のメディアからは抽出されない作家の眼を通したリアリティーが作品に密度として蓄積されます。
表現で行われる行為は具象であり、観察を元に生み出したものではあるが、一見すると日常で見ることのない非日常的なビジュアルとなっている。そんな作品群の前で鑑賞者は単なる描写をされたものとして観ることができなくなり、作者と鑑賞者との間にフィルターを作ります。それは作品を観る側の考え(動き)を踏まえた大谷が意図的に仕組んだ仕掛けであり、独自のスタイルです。
今回の展覧会のタイトル「COLOR MIXING」は混色という意味があります。制作の中で当たり前のように行う混色という行為だけではなく、具象表現という枠の中でありながら作品ごとに決められたテーマの作品を一つの空間に混ぜた状況、更にその空間に鑑賞者が入り作品と対峙する様子、全てをテーマに含む言葉として選ばれています。
様々な技法で描かれた多数の新作による展示となります。 また、大谷が著者の書籍「1日で描くリアル油絵の基本」内容に沿って制作した油絵作品も多数新作を展示します。

Naoya Otani is a figurative artist who uses a realistic painting technique.
He believes that painting technique is a necessary tool for expression and creates two-dimensional works from various viewpoints. He uses different methods for each work, without unifying the motifs of still life, landscape, and even what appears to be abstract. In addition, Otani has a rule that he always observes the motifs when he works, so that the reality through the artist’s eyes, which cannot be extracted from media such as photographs, accumulates in the works as density.
Although the act of expression is figurative and based on observation, at first glance, the works have an unusual visual quality that we don’t see in our daily lives. In front of such works, viewers are no longer able to view them as mere depictions, creating a filter between the artist and viewers. This is a device deliberately devised by Otani based on the thoughts (movements) of the viewer, and is a unique style.
The title, “COLOR MIXING,” means mixing colors. The word “COLOR MIXING” was chosen to describe not only the act of mixing colors as a matter of course in the process of making a work of art, but also the situation in which the works of a specific theme for each work are mixed in a space, and the way the viewer enters the space and confronts the work, all within the framework of figurative expression. The exhibition will feature many new works painted with various techniques.
In addition, there will be a number of new oil paintings created by Otani based on the content of the author’s book, “The Basics of Real Oil Painting in a Day”.
