大口かつみは2007年より、透明水彩による絵画制作に着手した。初期は透明水彩のみを用いた表現に専念していたが、現在では墨、アクリル、箔、胡粉など、伝統的・現代的な各種画材を自在に用い、技法や素材の枠にとらわれない自由なアプローチを展開している。近年は立体的な造形も取り入れ、作品の表現領域をさらに拡張している。
透明水彩作品においては、光と影の対比や色彩の妙に主眼を置き、しなやかでありながらも力強い筆致により、鑑賞者に鮮烈な印象と強いエネルギーを与える画風を確立している。特に動物をモチーフとした作品群においては、その眼差しや動勢を通して、生命の感情や緊張感を鋭く捉えることに長けている。
蝶もまた、大口の作品にしばしば登場する重要なモチーフの一つである。
本展に出品された作品では、墨、胡粉、石膏などを用いた重厚なマチエールを形成し、現代社会における気候変動、紛争、経済的不安定性といった複雑な問題群を象徴的に表現している。そうした困難な時代状況の中、今にも力尽きそうになりながらも、蝶は羽を広げ、風を巧みに捉えながら前へと進もうとする。その姿は、逆境に抗い、なおも未来へと進もうとする「希望」や「勇気」の象徴として描かれている。
本作は、「困難を越え、それでもなお未来を信じる」という作家の強い意志と願いが込められた作品である。



Since 2007, Katsumi Ōguchi has been creating artworks using transparent watercolor. In the early stages of his career, he focused exclusively on expression through transparent watercolor alone. However, in recent years, he has expanded his artistic approach by freely incorporating a variety of traditional and contemporary materials such as ink, acrylic, gold and silver leaf, and gofun (white shell pigment), transcending the boundaries of technique and medium. More recently, he has also introduced three-dimensional forms into his work, further broadening the scope of his artistic expression.
In his watercolor works, Ōguchi emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow and the subtle nuances of color. With a brushwork that is both graceful and powerful, he has developed a distinctive style that leaves a vivid impression and conveys intense energy to viewers. His series featuring animals as motifs is particularly notable for its keen ability to capture the emotional depth and tension of life through their gaze and movement.
Butterflies are also a recurring and significant motif in Ōguchi’s work.
In the pieces exhibited in this show, he employs rich textures (matière) created with ink, gofun, and plaster to symbolically represent the complex challenges facing contemporary society—climate change, conflict, and economic instability. Amid such difficult conditions, the butterfly, on the verge of exhaustion, spreads its wings and catches the wind with skill, striving to move forward. This image is portrayed as a symbol of “hope” and “courage”—resisting adversity and pressing onward into the future.
This work embodies the artist’s strong will and heartfelt wish: to overcome hardship and still believe in the future.
