彫刻家鹿山卓耶は、普段は目に見えない普遍的な「生」の存在を、彫刻制作における素材との対話の中で確かめる試みを行っています。
これまで木やテラコッタ土を主な素材として、作品を制作してきました。素材が有する、もののイメージと具象モチーフのイメージを掛け合わせることにより、観念の形象化に取り組んできました。そのテーマに「変化」を掲げています。鹿山は、変化を内面的なエネルギーの高まりで起こる、生命的な強さが表れる状態であると考えます。そうした観念に基づいて制作された作品は、複合的なイメージによってデフォルメした動物や人の姿で、単一の素材、時に異素材を組み合わせる方法によってつくられてきました。
初の個展である今回の展示は、最近の取り組みの素材がもつ生命的なイメージに対し、その内に捉えた姿を直彫り法によって求めていく木彫作品を中心に、これまでの作品を交えた構成となります。出品する木彫の大作は、原木の形の内に捉えた姿をきっかけとして彫りはじめ、造形によって絶えず変化していく素材の形に対して、素材と対話をするように、その時々の気づきをぶつけていくことで完成像を求めています。鹿山の取り組みは刹那的な「生」の連続行為であるとも言え、作品は確かな存在感のある像として結ばれています。

Sculptor Takuya Kayama is trying to confirm the existence of a universal “life” that is normally invisible in the dialogue with materials in sculpture production. So far, he has created works using wood and terracotta soil as the main material. He has been working on giving a shape to the idea by combining the image of the things and the image of the concrete motif. The theme is “change”. Kayama believes that changes are a state of vital strength that arises from the rise of internal energy. The works with this idea have been created by combining a single material and sometimes different materials with the shape of animals and people deformed by a composite image.
This exhibition, which is the first solo exhibition of the artist, is based on a woodcarving work that seeks the image captured in the life image of the material of recent efforts by direct carving, and combines the works so far it becomes the composition. The masterpieces of woodcarving to be exhibited were carved with the figure captured in the shape of the raw wood, and the occasional awareness of the material shape that constantly changes as a result of the modelling, as if interacting with the material we are looking for a complete image. Kayama’s efforts can be said to be a continual act of “life”, and the work is linked as a solid image.
