略歴

土肥勇志は、過去にいじめを受けてきた経験から「人間関係」をテーマに絵画制作をしています。今まで受けてきた疎外感や違和感から「解放された世界」に作者は小学生の頃から憧れており、新聞やインターネット、SNS上に氾濫する人物や動物の画像を「イメージ」として配置した上で色面のレイヤーと組み合わせることで人とのつながりや現実をトレースしない「解放された世界」を表現します。また、「現実」と「虚構」の境界線上に位置する「解放された世界」を群像画や抽象絵画という媒体を通して表現しています。

土肥勇志が描く絵画は、人体や服の皺などの陰影で立体感を表現する西洋的な絵画技法と浮世絵、マンガやアニメの線を生かした人物表現を融合させています。また、作品に描かれている人物の性格やオーラを色彩で表す抽象絵画の表現も組み合わせて「人間関係」を表現しています。

近年SNS上を中心に見られる差別的・暴力的な表現や誹謗中傷、主義主張の違いによって生じる社会的な分断が多く見られています。作者の絵画表現は、多様性や民主的な価値観が危機に瀕する中で「絶望」を「絶望」で終わらせず、新しい「希望」を描くことで一つの指標になるのではないか？と考えています。

本展「ここではない、どこかへ。」では、人間関係をテーマにした群像画や抽象絵画を展示し、多様性をギャラリーという空間上に再現します。

Yushi Doi creates paintings with the theme of "human relationships," drawing from his past experiences of being bullied. Since his elementary school years, he has longed for a "liberated world" free from the alienation and discomfort he once felt. By combining layers of color planes with images of people and animals, which are often found in newspapers, the internet, and social media, he expresses a "liberated world" that doesn't trace human connections or reality. Additionally, Doi uses the mediums of group portraits and abstract paintings to express this "liberated world," which exists on the boundary between "reality" and "fiction."

The paintings by Yushi Doi merge Western painting techniques—such as creating three-dimensionality through shading on the human body and clothing—with the character expressions found in ukiyo-e, manga, and anime. He also incorporates abstract expressions that depict the personalities and auras of the figures through color, all in an effort to represent "human relationships."

In recent years, we have witnessed a rise in discriminatory and violent expressions, online defamation, and social divisions stemming from differences in political ideologies, especially on social media. Doi believes that his artistic expression, which doesn't allow "despair" to remain as despair but instead draws new "hope," could serve as a guiding light in a time when diversity and democratic values are under threat.

In this exhibition, "Not Here, Somewhere Else," Doi will showcase group portraits and abstract paintings that explore human relationships, recreating the concept of diversity within the gallery space.
