波多の明翠は書家でありながら、文字を絵でいうモチーフと捉え、絵画的な作品を制作している。
波多の明翠を語る上で“楽”という文字は欠かせないパートナーとなっており2005年1月に滞在していたニューヨークのアパートで“楽”の象形文字が降臨したという。 それ以降“楽”の象形文字をモチーフに刺激的な街であるニューヨークをテーマに描き続けており、その後“楽”が独り立ちし、明翠の分身として様々な作品の中に現れている。
書という概念はモノトーンの世界で文字を一気に書きあげるもので何層も文字を重ねカラフルな墨を使い、ゴールドの墨でドリッピングをして仕上げている。
文字は絵画でいうモチーフと考え、ある時は擬人化し、またある時は自然物として表現した独自の表現世界を築いており、古典的な書のイメージを打破したコンテンポラリーアートである。
作品を制作する傍ら、東日本大震災の被災地をはじめ走る事により各地を走りそれにより生み出された作品が多数ある。

Hatano Meisui is a calligrapher, but she creates pictorial works, taking letters as motifs in pictures.
When she talks about Hata no Meisui, she has become an indispensable partner for the character “Raku”, and in January 2005, the hieroglyph of “Raku” appeared at the apartment in New York where she was staying.
Since then, she has continued to draw on the theme of New York, an exciting city, with the hieroglyph of “Raku” as a motif.
The concept of calligraphy is to write letters in a single stroke in a monotone world.
Thinking of letters as motifs in painting, at times they are personified, at other times they are expressed as natural objects, creating a unique world of expression.
While producing her works, there are many works created by running around various places, including the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
