日本画の魅力は絵の具の魅力、素材の面白さによるところが大きく、他の画材とは違う非常に繊細で透明感のある雰囲気を醸し出す宝石のような顔料の輝きと煌き、柔らかな光を放つ画肌にあります。日本画は、日本の中で熟成、独自に発展した様式といえますが近年では、油彩画の影響を受け、絵具を厚く塗り重ねた表現や抽象的描画など、いわゆる伝統的な技法にとらわれない表現技法もみられるようになっています。また、昨今では、伝統的な日本画の手法を借りながら、現代アートの最先端を切り開くアーティストも現れ、日本画を基調とした作品は世界からも注目を集めるようになっています。 本展では、この日本画の世界に光をあて、日本画の世界で美を追求するアーティスト４名を選出し、それぞれの作家が心のうちに秘めた眺め、心象風景(Inscape)を岩絵の具という画肌のなかに表現します。また、展示作品を通じ日本画というテーマで様々な技法とスタイルの中に映し出される心象世界をコンテンポラリーアートシーンの問題として捉え、日本の伝統的な技法や様式の上に育てられ、熟成発展した日本画という視覚芸術に今一度その価値を求め、日本画の王道的見地に立脚し次世代の日本画の可能性と方向性を探りたいと思います。

The materials used on the work itself stand out on Japanese traditional paintings, there is a clarity in the works as if the pigments were like the soft light from the paintings which creates atmosphere to the work of art, and that is the major difference between Japanese paintings and Western traditional oil paintings. Japanese traditional paintings have been developed in an unique way in Japan, but there is a certain influence of Western oil paintings such as putting a lot of layers of paint or abstract expressionism in contemporary Japanese artworks. There is also a way of making artworks using traditional Japanese painting techniques as well as contemporary ways of working, and this could possibly lead Japanese contemporary art world amongst other movements in the world. In this exhibition called “Inscape”, we are focusing on Japanese paintings and we have selected 4 artists who seek the aesthetics in the world of Japanese paintings. Each artist visualise their own “Inscape” using rock pigment on the surface of the works. The main concept of this exhibition is to show the impact of Japanese paintings in contemporary art scenes and the directions and possibilities of the Japanese art in the next generations.
