Reihei Tamura has been consistently creating artwork inspired by insects. The origin of this passion can be traced back to his childhood when he caught and raised a stag beetle. Since then, he started drawing insects using crayons and colored pencils, inspired by picture books and encyclopedias his family provided. During high school, Tamura discovered Japanese-style painting, which led him to pursue it further at university, where he began focusing on insects as his primary motif.
Insects, while being familiar creatures, possess a remarkable history spanning approximately 400 million years, with an astonishing diversity of over a million species (and potentially far more, considering the undiscovered ones). Despite this vast diversity, the lifespan of an individual insect is fleeting and ephemeral. Tamura is captivated by this contrast, which he finds deeply compelling and uses as a motif in his art.
Through his work, Tamura explores themes of modern societal stress, the anxiety and pressure to become "someone," and the struggles of individuality. Using insects as a motif, he aims to express the importance of diversity and the value of individuality. He continually experiments with various materials, including delicate mediums like ink, large-particle pigments such as mineral pigments, and materials with strong textural qualities, like gold and silver leaf, to create richly textured surfaces. To enhance the presence of his motifs, he also challenges himself with diverse artistic styles and techniques.
For his latest exhibition, Tamura plans to showcase works that integrate the unique characteristics of these materials with the historical and diverse nature of insects.
