西山は木彫作家として十数年作品制作を続けている。
今回の展覧会では西山が近年制作を続けている像シリーズの展示になる。
像シリーズの作品はヒトのような形をした作品群であり、荒々しく彫りだされ、一刀彫りともいえるような面が残る形からは、木を素材としているからこその造形の美しさを感じることができる。
また、割れ、節、洞（うろ）、穴、白太、ヤニ、といった、一般的に木材としては欠点とされる部分をあえて個性としてとらえ、積極的に表現に取り込もうとしており、そこには作者の木に対する愛情のようなものをも感じることができる。西山は多くの材料を切り倒された樹木の状態から自身の手で調達しているため、“木材”としてではなく“木”として扱っている。
像シリーズの初期作品の多くは、燃え残った木を感じさせるような表現方法であったのに対し、今回の展覧会で並べられる作品は、初期のものに比べると彫りをより鮮やかに感じさせるものや、木そのものの美しさをより際立たせるような表現になっている。立ち位置の差でいうなれば、“作者のイメージ”と“素材”という構造でいえば、より素材に近づいたスタンスで制作をしているとも言えるのではないだろうか。それらの作品からは、十数年にわたり木に向き合ってきた西山が、現時点で木をどのように捉えているかということを、うかがい知ることができる展覧会となるだろう。

Nishiyama has been creating wood sculptures for over a decade. This exhibition will showcase his recent series of statues.
The statues in this series resemble human forms and are carved in a rough, almost single-stroke style that highlights the inherent beauty of the wood. The shapes, with their rough-hewn surfaces, emphasize the unique aesthetic qualities that wood as a material possesses.
Nishiyama intentionally incorporates elements typically considered flaws in lumber—cracks, knots, hollows, holes, sapwood, and resin—into his works, treating them as unique characteristics rather than imperfections. This approach reflects his deep affection for wood. As he often sources his materials directly from felled trees, he engages with wood in its natural form rather than as processed lumber.
While many of the early pieces in the statue series conveyed a sense of charred remnants, the works featured in this exhibition are more vibrant and highlight the natural beauty of the wood. Compared to his earlier works, these new pieces seem to take a closer stance toward the material itself, focusing more on the wood’s intrinsic qualities rather than solely on the artist’s vision. This exhibition offers a glimpse into how Nishiyama, after over a decade of working with wood, currently perceives and engages with his chosen medium.
